Lash services involve concentrated close work, repetitive hand movements and sustained postures. A technician may remain in a similar position for an extended period while performing very small, controlled actions.
Career longevity depends on more than tolerating discomfort. It requires a workstation and working routine designed to reduce avoidable strain.
Recognising Ergonomic Risk
Common risks in lash work include:
- Leaning over the client
- Rounding the shoulders
- Bending the neck for long periods
- Raising the shoulders while isolating
- Holding the wrists at an awkward angle
- Gripping tweezers too tightly
- Repeating the same finger movements
- Reaching repeatedly for products
- Sitting without adequate support
- Working for long periods without changing position
Early warning signs may include:
- Neck or shoulder discomfort
- Headaches
- Tingling or numbness
- Wrist, hand or finger pain
- Reduced grip strength
- Lower-back discomfort
- Eye fatigue
- Blurred focus
- Dry, uncomfortable eyes
Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional. A technician should not self-diagnose an occupational injury.
Setting Up the Treatment Bed
The client should be positioned so the technician can see the lash line without excessive bending.
Review:
- Treatment-bed height
- Client head position
- Technician chair height
- Lower-back support
- Foot position
- Space for the knees
- Distance from the client
- Placement of the trolley
- Position of the lash palette
- Stability of all equipment
The technician should be able to bring the working area closer rather than repeatedly reaching forward.
Supporting the Hands and Wrists
Precision does not require excessive grip force.
During application:
- Keep the wrists as neutral as possible
- Relax the shoulders
- Avoid pressing the forearms against a hard edge
- Hold tweezers with controlled rather than excessive pressure
- Reposition the client instead of twisting
- Place products within easy reach
- Change hand position during natural pauses
- Stop if pain or numbness develops
Hand exercises may support comfort, but they do not correct an unsuitable workstation. The setup must be reviewed first.
Lighting and Visual Comfort
Poor lighting can cause the technician to lean closer and strain to see isolation.
Professional lighting should:
- Illuminate both eyes evenly
- Reduce harsh shadows
- Remain stable
- Avoid uncomfortable glare
- Allow clear visibility of fine lashes
- Be adjustable without interrupting the service
Position the light before beginning. The client should be able to close their eyes comfortably without feeling excessive heat or glare.
Managing Close-Focus Work
The technician’s eyes remain focused at a short distance throughout much of the treatment.
To support visual comfort:
- Look away during natural breaks
- Focus briefly on an object farther away
- Blink fully and regularly
- Avoid staring without blinking
- Keep the room appropriately ventilated
- Arrange regular eye examinations
- Use prescribed vision correction
- Avoid working when visual clarity is impaired
- Take proper breaks between long appointments
A magnifying aid may help some technicians, but it should not replace suitable lighting, an eye examination or appropriate prescription lenses.
A Micro-Break Routine
Between sections or during an appropriate pause:
- Lower the tweezers safely.
- Relax the fingers.
- Drop the shoulders.
- Gently change neck position.
- Sit back into the chair.
- Look at a distant point.
- Take several slow breaths.
- Recheck the workstation before continuing.
The client must remain safe and supported throughout. Do not leave tools or unsecured products near the client’s eyes.
Practical Activity: Complete a Workstation Assessment
Ask another student or educator to observe your working position from the side and behind.
Record:
- Neck angle
- Shoulder position
- Back support
- Wrist alignment
- Distance from the client
- Light position
- Product placement
- Unnecessary reaching
- Areas of visible tension
Take a photograph of the setup without including an identifiable client unless appropriate permission has been obtained.
Make three adjustments and repeat the observation. Compare the two positions and create a personal pre-treatment ergonomic checklist.
